The official Danish language education at Aalborg University

HF&VUC NORD offers the official Danish language education for students, staff, and spouses at Aalborg University. With many years of experience teaching Danish to international community members, our programs provide more than just language skills—you will also gain insights into the Danish job market and cultural norms.

Our goal is to support you effectively in everyday Danish—whether for life, work, or studies.

We offer both daytime and evening classes.

Danish Education Programmes 1, 2 and 3 each correspond to 1–2 years of full-time study.

Many participants choose to complete the programme alongside work or other activities, which often extends the duration.

The programme can be completed within a period of up to five years.

You can join the programme at any time of the year—start when it fits your schedule.

While most participants at Aalborg University begin in the autumn with the academic semester, you are welcome to start at any time during the year.

Danish Language Education is offered to newly arrived foreigners who are at least 18 years old and who have one of the following:

A residence permit or permanent, legal residence in Denmark, along with a registered address in a Danish municipality,

Permanent residence under EU regulations and residence in a Danish municipality.

It is also available to EU cross-border commuters who work or run a business in Denmark but have permanent residence outside the country.

For most participants, Danish Language Education is free of charge.
However, in some cases a deposit of DKK 2,000 is required.

If you are self-supporting (for example, working or studying in Denmark), or if your education entitlement has expired (meaning you have lived in Denmark for more than five years), you must pay the deposit before starting.

If you are in Denmark as a refugee, a family reunified spouse, or an au pair, you are not required to pay the deposit.

Should I take Danish Language Education 1, 2 or 3?

That depends on your educational background.

Danish Language Education 1 is for those who cannot read or write the Latin alphabet.
Danish Language Education 2 is for those with a short school or educational background from their home country.
Danish Language Education 3 is for those with a medium or long educational background.

How are the classes organized?

Classes take place on campus at Aalborg University. Most classes are scheduled in the afternoons and evenings, but morning sessions may also be available—please ask our instructor, Charlotte, for more information.

What does it cost?

Most participants in our Danish courses at Aalborg University are required to pay a deposit of DKK 2,000 when they start. The deposit will be refunded once you have completed the Danish Language Education programme.

How do I get started?

To get started, you first need to contact your local municipality. They will inform you whether you are entitled to free Danish Language Education.
When speaking with the municipality, let them know that you wish to take the Danish programme at HF&VUC NORD at AAU.
Once we receive the referral from the municipality, we will contact you and invite you to an initial assessment.

Language requirement for receiving unemployment benefits (dagpenge) as a graduate

Are you an international graduate from Aalborg University? Then specific rules apply if you wish to apply for unemployment benefits (dagpenge).

The right to unemployment benefits under the graduate rule (dimittendreglen) is conditional upon meeting a language requirement.

You meet the requirement if you have:

Passed Danish Language Test 2 (Prøve i Dansk 2) with a minimum grade of 02 on the Danish 7-point grading scale, or another Danish test at an equivalent or higher level.
Completed grade 6 in a Danish primary school (folkeskole), or in a comparable Danish free school or private school. A primary school education outside Denmark cannot be used to meet the requirement (with certain exceptions).

Important: Even if you do not meet the language requirement, you may still qualify for unemployment benefits as a graduate if you meet the attachment requirement (tilknytningskravet).
